Web hosting guide web solutions for artistsweb solutions for nonprofitsweb solutions for small businesseffective, affordable web solutions

Want a website? You need these two things:

  • a domain name (like www.spunsimply.com) so visitors can find your site easily.
  • web hosting, the place 'on the web' where all your files sit so they can be accessed by others.

Here's the simple rundown on what to do:

We recommend our clients purchase an inexpensive hosting and domain-name package from 1and1.com. 1and1.com provides excellent quality of service, ease of use, a host of goodies (like one year free private domain registration and multiple email accounts), and the best prices we've found for our clients' needs. By purchasing this package yourself, your site will be up for as long as you want.

Head to 1and1.com. You want to purchase a Linux hosting package from the menu on the left. The cheapest one ('Beginner') should be all you need, but if you want to spend more, who are we to judge? During the checkout process you'll have the option to buy a domain name as well. If you don't have one yet, pick out something nice - what you call your site is up to you. (Note: If you already have a domain name but still need hosting, we still recommend 1and1.com for their price and stability.)

Make sure you keep track of the password you create for your new account with 1and1 so we can get everything set up for you later.

The 'Beginner' package provides a free domain name on top of $3.99/month website hosting (billed in 6 month blocks for a total of $23.94 per cycle). Your credit card will be charged this total the first time you register, and automatically at 6 month intervals. You can easily cancel the package in the future.

Here's the much longer, step-by-step explanation of what to do. And it has pictures!:

1. Click this link: http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=10507577 to visit 1and1.com (the extra numbers and letters are our referral ID). From the menu on the left, select 'Linux Hosting' under the web hosting category.

2. On the next page, any of the packages listed will work fine, but you shouldn't need any of the extra bells and whistles provided by the more expensive packages. Thus the 1&1 Beginner package will have you covered - click that column's 'Sign Up' to proceed.

3. If you already have a domain name, or don't wish to select your domain name now, click 'choose a domain later' on the right (and skip to step 5 below). Otherwise use the box on the left to check of your domain name is available.

4. On the next page you'll see a list of available domain names - hopefully the one you covet is among them. If it's not, you can search again at the bottom of the page. Once you've found an available domain name that suits your fancy, make sure the box next to your desired domain name is checked (you can add other similar domains from the list below for an additional cost) and click 'Continue'.

5. Next you'll be offered Norton Internet Security free for three months. You can take the offer or click 'no thanks' - it's your call, and it won't affect your site one way or another.

6. The next screen shows your cart. At minimum you should see a package, as many (or as few) domains as you chose. Click Continue to, well, continue.

7. Select your country and then click Continue.

8. Presumably you aren't already a 1and1 customer (else why would you need this walkthru?) so leave the first question marked 'no', then fill in your address information below. Important: at the very bottom of the address section make sure to select the circle next to 'Register your domain privately?' This will cut down on both unwanted mail and email. Once you're ready, click Continue.

...and...

9. Select a password. Stroke our egos by saying you heard about 1and1 from a friend. Then click Continue.

10. Don't worry, you're almost done. Fill in your payment information (note the handy instructions further down the page if you choose to pay with PayPal as opposed to a credit card). All set? Click Continue...

11. One last check - if everything looks good, hit submit.

12. Tada! Website! Keep a record of your new domain name and/or customer number and your password someplace safe so we can help you get things set up when it's time.
